Sue MacGregor reunites five musicians who embraced the anarchy of punk music and created a unique style of their own.
For many young people, Britain in the late 1970s was a place without hope. Unemployment was high. The value of the pound was low and, despite the feminist activity of the early 1970s, the most many girls aspired to was to marry well and look good.
Female role models were hard to fine – especially in music. The only all-girl troupes on Top of the Pops were Legs and Co.
Then punk happened.
Women could dress how they liked, behave how they wanted and develop their own sound without being manipulated by the mostly male gatekeepers of the record industry. Young women who didn’t fit the traditional mould of femininity found a new tribe in punk. A place where they could finally be themselves. But the movement attracted fear and aggression from straight society. And few made much money from the short-lived scene.
Sue MacGregor brings together five female punk pioneers.
Gaye Advert, bass player in The Adverts, was described as the first female punk star. But the industry focus on her looks caused animosity in the band.
Toyah Willcox, an aggressive tomboy, found her emotional rebellion in punk and appeared in Derek Jarman’s cult punk film Jubilee.
Gina Birch of The Raincoats played her first gig in November 1977 a few weeks after forming her all-female band.
Tessa Pollitt abandoned her A levels to join all girl punk band, The Slits.
Vivien Goldman was in the The Flying Lizards and Features Editor on the weekly music paper, Sounds. She is now a Professor of Punk in New York.
The guests discuss the impact and legacy of their movement.

“Ένα βράδυ περιμέναμε έξω από το Whisky, το πλάνο ήταν να μαζευτεί η συμμορία μας* μπροστά στην σκηνή ακριβώς πριν ανέβουν να παίξουν οι Fear. Κολοβαρούσαμε στο πεζοδρόμιο παρέα με τα καλύτερα παιδιά του hardcore όταν πλάι στο πεζοδρόμιο άραξε ένα εντυπωσιακό hot rod από τα ηχεία του οποίου ακουγόταν κάποια ροκ μαλακία. Από τη θέση του συνοδηγού ξεπετάχτηκε ο “Diamond” David Lee Roth των Van Halen, κομπλέ με το ριγέ κολάν, τα γυαλιά-καθρέφτες και τα ανεξέλεγκτα μαλλιά του. Στην θέση του οδηγού ο Eddie Van Halen περίμενε τον παρκαδόρο.
Με τα χέρια ανοιχτά ο Lee Roth απευθύνθηκε προς το πλήθος φωνάζοντας “Κοιτάτε ποιος ήρθεεεεεεεε”.
Ο συμβουλάτορας του προφανώς είχε ξεχάσει να τον ενημερώσει για το ποιος παίζει στο Whisky εκείνη τη βραδιά. Το αποσβολωμένο κοπάδι πάνκηδων υποδέχτηκε την επική αυτή είσοδο με νεκρική σιγή μέχρι που λίγα δευτερόλεπτα αργότερα κάποιος φώναξε:
“Την γάμησες!”
Ακολούθησε μια έκρηξη γέλιου ακολουθούμενη από καταιγισμό μπύρας και ρόχαλας. Τα χέρια του πλήθους στριφογυρνούσαν τον David και ή φάση έμοιαζε με ζωντανό φλίπερ λίγο πριν το τιλτ.
Με το που κατάλαβε ότι βρισκόταν σε εχθρικό έδαφος ξαναχώθηκε στο αμάξι φωνάζοντας στον Eddie “Πάτα το, τον Χριστό μου μέσα!” “

Ήταν λοιπόν μια φορά και έναν καιρό το Blues, αρχικά ένα μακρόστενο υπόγειο στην Βατοπεδίου και αργότερα ισόγειο, (νεοκλασικό άραγε?), στην Πανόρμου. Η πρώτη μου επίσκεψη κάπου γύρω στο 1990 ήταν σίγουρα η πρώτη φορά που ήρθα σε ουσιαστική επαφή με τα ακουστικά blues και την sangria.Δεν ήταν μέρος για πιτσιρικάδες ώστε να μπορώ υπερηφανεύομαι ότι υπήρξε στέκι μου αλλά τα απογεύματα μετά (η αντί για ) τη σχολή που πέρασα εκεί θα έχουν πάντα αυτή τη θολούρα της όμορφης ανάμνησης και της κάπνας που 18-19 χρονών σου μοιάζει και λίγο για ατμόσφαιρα noir.Το θυμάμαι κάθε που περνάω από την Πανόρμου και σήμερα που διάβασα το παρακάτω κειμενάκι του Λάμπρου Παπαλέξη (που ασφαλώς και θα με έχει ποτίσει) χωρίς κανείς από τους δύό μας να γνωρίζει ότι θα συναντηθούμε καμιά 20αριά χρόνια αργότερα με αφορμή μια εκπομπή (ακούστε την εδώ), χωρίς και εγώ να ξέρω ότι ήταν ο Φάντης Μπαστούνι των οποίων την κασέτα είχα αγοράσει από το Studio 51 στην Δροσοπούλου και ακόμα πρέπει να έχω καταχωνιασμένη κάπου.
“Μια άγνωστη ιστορία….
Όταν δούλευα σαν barman και όχι μόνο , στο παλιό Blues bar στην Βατοπεδίου μεταξύ νομίζω 1988-1992 κάποιες φορές τα απογεύματα πριν πάω για δουλειά πήγαινα και έτρωγα δίπλα στον ”Καρβουνιάρη”*… Ταβέρνα με βαρέλια , άθλιο φαγητό και service…αλλά πάντα ήταν εκεί ένας τύπος ακαθορίστου ηλικίας , τυφλός που έπαιζε κλασική κιθάρα και τραγουδούσε κάτι απελπισμένα ερωτικά τραγούδια που μου σηκώνανε τη τρίχα… και την ώρα που το λεπίδι του μαχαιριού χάιδευε τη μπριζόλα και η κανάτα γέμιζε το ποτήρι με κρασί σκεφτόμουν πως ο Blind Willie McTell ζει κάπου εκεί…

Churches. Catholics. Jews. Christians. Protestants. Mormons. Muslims. Scientologists. They’re all macrocosms of the ego. When man began to think he was a separate person with a separate soul, it created a violent situation.
Everyone wants an answer. I think it was Gertrude Stein who wrote, “There is no answer, there never was an answer, there’ll never be an answer. That’s the answer.” It’s a hard sell, but that’s the ultimate truth.
For Ride in the Whirlwind, Jack came to me and said, “Harry I’ve got this part for you. His name is Blind Dick Reilly and he’s the head of the gang. He’s got a patch over one eye and a derby hat.” Then he says, “But I don’t want you to do anything. Let the wardrobe play the character.” Which meant, just play yourself. That became my whole approach.
Awareness is its own action.
We had a scene in One from the Heart. Francis Ford Coppola comes up to me and he says, “Harry Dean, why don’t you direct this scene?” Can you imagine that?
Ten seconds from now you don’t know what you’re gonna say or think. So who’s in charge?

Oh, yeah, Marlon and I talked about this stuff all the time. On the phone once, he said, “What do you think of me?” And I said, “I think you’re nothing.” And he goes, “Bahahaha!”
Is there an interesting way to go? Who gives a fuck? You’re already gone.
The only fear I have is how long consciousness is gonna hang on after my body goes. I just hope there’s nothing. Like there was before I was born.

Hang on, I gotta take this call. “Hey, brother. That’s great, man. Yeah, I’m being interviewed by this Esquire guy. We’re talking about nothing. I’ve got him well-steeped in nothing right now. He’s stopped asking questions.”

On Friday, January 8th, nearly six months after his escape from Mexico’s most secure prison, Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquín Guzmán Loera, a.k.a. El Chapo, was apprehended and taken back into custody. Just months earlier, Sean Penn had traveled in secret through the Mexican jungle to meet with Chapo, then America’s most wanted international fugitive. Upon meeting Penn, the drug kingpin consented to an interview at a later time. Ultimately, it proved impossible to do the interview in-person, but Penn sent questions by BBM device and Chapo agreed to record his responses on videotape. Without being present, Penn could neither control the questioning, nor prod for elaborations into his responses. Here, you can view the 17-minute video that Chapo sent back in its entirety.

After the record came out, you hit the road with Neil Young and Sonic Youth. What was that tour like?
It was good and it was bad. For us, it was a great opportunity to play in front of some crowds that maybe weren’t around during the punk scene. The problem was if we were at, for instance, Madison Square Garden, if we did have 300 fans there that night, we’d have never known it because it was arranged seating and our fans aren’t used to that. On the good side, I was becoming very groove-oriented at that time and I would watch Crazy Horse turn their back on 10,000 people and walk back up to the drummer and lock into the groove, and I was realizing that if the song doesn’t have a groove, you’re just bashing through chords. So it really reinforced the foundation of music I had grown up with prior to punk, from the third grade on: the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin, Bad Company and ZZ Top, all those bands had thick grooves. It was a schooling for me.
